Alvin and the Chipmunks (2007): Cast, Plot and the Box-Office Story Critics Didn’t See Coming

By Sarah Preston

Alvin and the Chipmunks (2007) is a live-action/CGI comedy directed by Tim Hill and released by 20th Century Fox on 14 December 2007. Jason Lee plays songwriter Dave Seville, and Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler and Jesse McCartney voice Alvin, Simon and Theodore. Critics tore into it. It still made around $361 million worldwide and kicked off a four-film run.

That gap between the reviews and the receipts is the part most write-ups gloss over. Below you’ll find the full 2007 cast and plot, and then the more interesting question: how a film reviewers hated turned into one of the stickiest family hits of its decade.

What is Alvin and the Chipmunks 2007 about?

Three talking, singing chipmunks lose their home when their tree gets chopped down and shipped to Los Angeles. They end up living with Dave Seville, a songwriter who’s getting nowhere, and once he hears them sing, he turns them into pop stars. The trouble starts when a record executive decides he’d rather cash in on them than look after them.

Jon Vitti wrote the screenplay with the writing team of Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi, according to Wikipedia. The chipmunks cover pop songs like “Funkytown” and “Bad Day” and perform a few of their own. It’s a thin story, really, and it knows it. The whole appeal rests on watching believable CGI rodents share a room with live actors, and Rhythm & Hues Studios handled that animation.

Alvin and the Chipmunks 2007 cast

There are two casts to keep straight: the actors you see on screen and the ones who voiced the chipmunks. Jason Lee leads the on-screen side as Dave Seville, fresh off My Name Is Earl. David Cross plays the record executive Ian Hawke, and his villainous turn actually picked up some of the film’s few kind reviews.

Here’s the principal cast, per the 20th Century Studios Wiki and Moviepedia:

Actor Role Type
Jason Lee Dave Seville Live-action
David Cross Ian Hawke Live-action
Cameron Richardson Claire Wilson Live-action
Jane Lynch Gail (talent scout) Live-action
Justin Long Alvin Voice
Matthew Gray Gubler Simon Voice
Jesse McCartney Theodore Voice

One thing worth knowing: the voice actors recorded everything at normal pitch, and that squeaky chipmunk sound got added afterwards by speeding up the audio. Ross Bagdasarian Sr. did the same thing when he first recorded the group back in 1958, so the 2007 version was basically a modern take on a trick that was almost 50 years old.

How did Alvin and the Chipmunks 2007 perform at the box office?

The film opened on 14 December 2007 with about $44.3 million, good enough for second place that weekend behind I Am Legend, per Box Office Mojo. Variety said the debut “surpassed all expectations.” From there, it climbed to roughly $361 million worldwide, off a budget of $55–60 million.

The audience numbers tell you why it kept going. Variety reported that families made up 53% of the opening-weekend crowd and that the film skewed slightly female, which usually means repeat visits and good word-of-mouth over the holidays. Fox’s senior VP of distribution, Chris Aronson, told Variety the marketing team had created “chipmunk fever,” bringing back older fans and hooking a new generation at the same time.

Home video kept the money coming, too. The film was the seventh-best-selling DVD of 2008 in the United States, according to the 20th Century Studios Wiki.

Why critics hated it (and it didn’t matter)

Reviews were brutal. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus says the film “suffers from bland potty humor and a rehashed kids’ movie formula,” and a lot of the notices singled out the high-pitched singing and the slapstick. Fox even put the film forward for a Best Animated Feature Oscar before it had finished the theatrical run that would have qualified it, and predictably, it wasn’t nominated, per the 20th Century Studios Wiki.

Here’s what most retrospectives leave out. This was a critic-proof family release, plain and simple. The bad reviews came almost entirely from adult critics, while the people buying tickets were mostly families. Fox had run the same holiday play a year earlier with Night at the Museum, and Alvin did exactly what it was designed to do: sell tickets to households during Christmas week. The reviews and the box office weren’t even measuring the same thing.

The franchise was launched.

The 2007 film turned out to be the first of four live-action entries, and once it hit those numbers,s the sequels were pretty much guaranteed.

Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise timeline:

  • 2007Alvin and the Chipmunks: ~$361 million worldwide
  • 2009Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel: ~$443 million worldwide (per Wikipedia); introduced the Chipettes
  • 2011Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked
  • 2015Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip

Four films in, the series had become one of the more durable family franchises of its era, and all of it traces back to a 2007 movie that reviewers wrote off.

Jason Lee played Dave Seville. It was one of his bigger film roles during his My Name Is Earl years.
